City have agreed a deal worth up to £52m to sell midfielder Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle United.
Newcastle will pay a guaranteed £48m for the 24-year-old, with another £4m potentially due in add-ons.
Gonzalez has been given permission to travel to the north east for a medical before completing the move.
The agreement brings his 18-month stay at City close to an end.
Gonzalez joined from Porto in February 2025, with City paying around £50m for a player brought in to strengthen their options in defensive midfield.
Gonzalez set for Newcastle move
His position at City has become less certain during a summer of substantial change to Enzo Maresca’s midfield.
Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest for a club-record £116m, while City are also working to complete the signing of Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Gonzalez had previously been open to staying at the Etihad but was an unused substitute for City’s opening Premier League victory over Bournemouth.
Newcastle have now moved to give him the opportunity for more regular football.
The fee means City are set to recover most, and potentially all, of the money they committed when signing Gonzalez from Porto.
His departure also comes with City continuing to pursue Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez before the transfer window closes.
There is still work to be done before Gonzalez officially becomes a Newcastle player, but agreement between the clubs leaves the transfer dependent on the remaining formalities.
