Man City ready formal Enzo Fernandez bid as midfielder opens door to move

City are preparing a formal bid for Enzo Fernandez before the transfer window closes, with the Chelsea midfielder now reportedly open to a move to the Etihad Stadium.

Fabrizio Romano reports that City will make another attempt to sign the Argentina international after weeks of contact with his representatives.

Fernandez has now “opened doors” to the move, while Chelsea’s stance remains that they will only sell for the right price and if they have the opportunity to strengthen their own squad.

City have been here before.

Chelsea previously set a £120million figure for Fernandez, but no official offer arrived before their self-imposed deadline earlier this month. City maintained their interest rather than walking away from the deal altogether.

Sky Sports subsequently reported that Fernandez remained a target despite the missed deadline.

City ready to make their move

The next step should finally bring some clarity.

City have spent much of the summer rebuilding Enzo Maresca’s midfield following Rodri’s departure for Barcelona, while Nico Gonzalez is also close to joining Newcastle United.

Ayyoub Bouaddi has completed his medical ahead of his move from Lille, but that has not ended City’s pursuit of Fernandez.

The Guardian reported on Monday that the expected sale of Gonzalez could help fund another attempt to sign the Chelsea midfielder.

Chelsea’s position will now be crucial. Xabi Alonso declined to guarantee Fernandez would remain at Stamford Bridge when asked about his future last week, saying only: “Enzo is a Chelsea player.”

City’s interest has never really gone away. The difference now is that they appear ready to put an offer on the table – and Fernandez appears willing to listen.
