Rodri’s impending departure for Barcelona dominated a busy day at City, with attention quickly turning towards how Enzo Maresca will reshape his midfield before the transfer window closes.
There was also fresh movement around Malo Gusto, Pedro Neto and Alexis Mac Allister, while Maresca responded to a difficult first competitive game in charge following Sunday’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat by Arsenal.
Here are the big City stories from Monday.
Rodri exit agreed as Barcelona meet City’s price
The biggest development came early in the day when Manchester City accepted Barcelona’s £65.4m offer for Rodri.
The Spain international has agreed a four-year contract with the La Liga champions and is set to leave City after seven seasons in Manchester.
Two previous Barcelona offers had been rejected before City’s valuation was finally met.
It represents the end of a hugely successful spell for Rodri, who made 298 appearances for the club and won four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
More immediately, it leaves Maresca with a considerable hole to fill.
The Athletic highlights City’s midfield problem
That issue was placed firmly under the microscope following Sunday’s Community Shield defeat.
The Athletic reported that City now face an urgent midfield rebuild as the final fortnight of the transfer window begins.
City went into the summer intending to back Maresca as he succeeded Pep Guardiola, but Rodri’s departure changes the complexion of the squad.
Elliot Anderson has already arrived for a club-record fee and Ayyoub Bouaddi remains a major target, but Sunday’s defeat provided further evidence that the work may not be finished.
Maresca refuses to change transfer plans after Arsenal defeat
Maresca, however, insists one result will not dictate City’s remaining business.
The Italian said the 3-0 defeat by Arsenal would not prompt a rethink of City’s transfer strategy.
City fell behind inside the opening minute in Cardiff and were comfortably beaten in Maresca’s first competitive match since replacing Guardiola.
The new head coach was understandably disappointed but stressed that this was only the beginning of his tenure.
Attention now turns towards Bournemouth and City’s opening Premier League fixture on Sunday.
City make fresh contact over Malo Gusto
There was also movement away from central midfield.
City have made fresh contact with Chelsea over Malo Gusto, according to Graeme Bailey.
The France international has been on City’s radar during the summer and would provide Maresca with a specialist option at right-back.
Chelsea’s valuation remains a potential obstacle and there is no suggestion yet that an agreement is close, but the renewed contact confirms Gusto remains a live option.
City step away from Pedro Neto pursuit
One Chelsea player now appears considerably less likely to arrive.
City have pulled out of the race for Pedro Neto as Al-Hilal close in on the Portugal international.
City had retained an interest in Neto, particularly with Savinho’s future unresolved, but the winger’s potential Saudi Arabia move has changed the picture.
The search for another wide player could still become significant if Savinho leaves before the deadline.
Mac Allister link emerges – but Liverpool stance is clear
Another midfielder entered the conversation on Monday.
City have been linked with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister as they assess options for the post-Rodri midfield.
There is an important caveat.
No talks with Liverpool have been reported and Mac Allister’s father and agent, Carlos, has played down the prospect of the Argentina international leaving Anfield this summer.
For now, he belongs among the names to monitor rather than transfers expected to happen.
Bouaddi deal reportedly completed
There was a further significant midfield development late in the day, with City reportedly completing a deal to sign Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Transfer journalist Nicolò Schira reports that the 18-year-old will sign a contract until 2031, although official confirmation from either club is still awaited.
Bouaddi had already agreed personal terms and City had been negotiating with Lille over the fee. If the deal is completed as expected, his arrival alongside Elliot Anderson would represent another major part of Enzo Maresca’s midfield rebuild following the agreement for Rodri to join Barcelona.
Transfer tracker updated after pivotal day
All of Monday’s developments have also been incorporated into the ReadManCity 2026 summer transfer tracker.
Rodri has moved into the departures section following the agreement with Barcelona, while Gusto and Mac Allister are among the latest names added to City’s incoming picture.
The tracker also includes the latest positions on Bouaddi, Enzo Fernandez, Savinho, Tijjani Reijnders and the rest of City’s summer business.
The common thread running through Monday’s news is clear.
City’s rebuild was already well under way, but losing Rodri makes the final fortnight of the window considerably more important. Anderson is part of the answer and Bouaddi could yet become another, but Maresca may need more before the window closes.
Sunday’s defeat should not define his new City side. What happens between now and deadline day could have a much greater bearing on the season ahead.
