City continue to be linked with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister as they prepare for Rodri’s departure, although the Argentina international’s camp has played down the prospect of a move.
The Guardian included Mac Allister among City’s potential midfield options on Monday, following earlier reports that the club had explored the possibility of signing the 27-year-old.
TalkSPORT reported last week that Mac Allister was being considered as City assessed possible replacements for Rodri, although there had been no talks with Liverpool at that stage.
Rodri is now closing in on his move to Barcelona after City accepted a reported £65.4m offer for the Spain international.
Mac Allister camp plays down City prospect
Any attempt to bring Mac Allister to Manchester would appear difficult.
His father and agent, Carlos Mac Allister, has responded to the speculation by insisting his son will remain at Liverpool this summer.
That significantly tempers suggestions that a deal could develop before the window closes.
City’s need for further midfield reinforcement is nevertheless becoming increasingly clear. Enzo Maresca confirmed after Sunday’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat by Arsenal that the club intend to remain active in the market.
Elliot Anderson has already arrived, while City are also pursuing Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi and have shown interest in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.
Mac Allister can therefore remain on the list of names associated with City’s midfield rebuild, but the evidence currently points towards him staying at Anfield.
