Aidy Boothroyd has confirmed that Manchester City youngster Patrick Roberts missed out on a place in the England U21s side because of Jack Harrison.

The Evening Times report that the Roberts, who’s currently out on loan at Celtic, missed out due to the emergence of Harrison, who has impressed playing over in the MLS.

Harrison has played a key role for Patrick Viera’s side, who are one of Manchester City’s sister clubs, but was a surprise call-up to the squad.

The 20-year-old was formerly a youngster at Manchester United but moved to America to seek more first-team opportunities.

Harrison found his name in the headlines after missing his flight to London, meaning he had to fork out £1,200 to get on the next flight to the English capital.

Roberts himself has impressed during the early stages of the season, with a particularly strong performance in the Champions League against Anderlecht, but missed out on a call-up.
