Manchester City sent a message out to the rest of the Premier League as they thrashed title rivals Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

It was a fantastic game from a City perspective as they tore their opponents apart with clinical ease, which is the first time in a while against a title rival! After a good start from Liverpool, City took the lead after a threaded through-ball from Kevin De Bruyne found Sergio Aguero, who rounded Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to convert.

The game slowed down after Sadio Mane was sent off after a high challenge on Ederson Moraes when through on goal. The Brazilian goalkeeper received a lot of treatment after receiving facial injuries to the cheek and jawbone. With eight minutes of added time awarded after the treatment, City doubled their advantage after another ball from De Bruyne found Gabriel Jesus for a bullet header.

In the second half, City controlled the game and ended the match as a contest when Aguero squared to Jesus for his second and City’s third. Substitute Leroy Sane added to the scoreline with two goals of his own, one being a fantastic curling strike, to add salt to Liverpool’s wounds. The Reds could not find a way through the Citizens, despite having the ascendancy early on. Three big points for Pep Guardiola’s men as they go top of the table for at least a few hours.
