Guardiola: Kompany call-up is ‘good’
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists that it is ‘good’ that Vincent Kompany has been called up by Belgium for international duty.
Kompany has been plagued with injuries in the past two seasons and has only recently returned to the City fold. However, the skipper has found himself regularly occupying a space on the bench at the Etihad, with Guardiola unsure whether he is ready to play a full 90 minutes of football.
Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Kompany will not be overworked while on international duty, where the Red Devils face Netherlands and Estonia, but there are still concerns among City fans that another setback could see Guardiola lose faith in the 30-year-old.
The Spaniard, meanwhile, appears to have no worries about the selection of Kompany and believes that getting minutes in his national team could be to Kompany’s benefit.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, following the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough, Guardiola said:
It will be good for him to get minutes and he will hopefully come back fit.
Manuel Pellegrini, formerly of Manchester City, had a bust-up with ex-Belgium manager Marc Wilmots over the amount of playing time that Kompany should have.
