Manchester City’s friendly with Manchester United on Monday in Beijing is in jeopardy due to torrential rain and heavy flooding in the Chinese capital, according to The Guardian.

Massive thunderstorms have hit Beijing this week, causing flights to be delayed and some areas of the city to be heavily flooded. The constant rain may cause the pitch at the 80,000 seater National Stadium – also known as the Bird’s Nest – to be unplayable.

And organisers of the International Champions Cup have expressed concerns that the match might not go ahead, with heavy thunderstorms predicted on the day of the clash.

Tournament spokesperson Xiaozheng Ben said:

It’s a concern. The weather has been really bad. But we’re hopeful the game will go ahead.

A United spokesperson also commented on the situation:

We are aware of the bad weather in Beijing, but also that the organisers are working very hard on getting the game to go ahead.

The United-City clash will be the first Manchester Derby to be played on foreign soil if it goes ahead.
