As Pep Guardiola’s reign at Manchester City begins, there are expected to be a lot of changes in the dressing room of the Etihad.
Having made three signings already – Ilkay Gundogan and Aaron Mooy – and a third in Nolito, Guardiola looks set to go through with his proposed summer overhaul at the club.
Many players are set to leave the club, leaving room for plenty to arrive. Players such as John Stones, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Toni Kroos have already been heavily linked with summer moves to the club, but do the Read Man City team want them?
Our writers name one player that they would like Guardiola to sign in his first transfer window at the club and explain why in the following slideshow.
Mark Findlow - Toni Kroos
Toni Kroos would be the ideal signing for City and is a player that has the potential to take the club to the next level. The quality of his passing is unbelievable and he is not shy in front of goal, either.
James Cunliffe - David Alaba
Familiar with Guardiola from his time in Munich, Alaba is an extremely talented and versatile player who has already learnt to adapt to new systems and positions. He is a natural athlete, who holds a delightful balance between defensive and offensive capability.
Having recently turned 24, there is still even more time for David to improve.
City could utilise him at left-back, centre-back or even midfield; all of which are positions that could be upgraded in the Sky Blues’ squad.
Jack Brain - Elseid Hysaj
With Pablo Zabaleta looking set to leave the club in the coming weeks, Napoli right-back Elseid Hysaj would be an ideal replacement.
His starring performances for Albania in the group stages of Euro 2016 saw La Liga giants Barcelona become interested in the 22-year-old, and City should do the same.
Jonny Cowley - Jonas Hector
The most pressing need for reinforcements is defensively, and we could certainly do with a fresh injection at full back. Arguably, both sides are a priority but I think left back is probably slightly higher on that list.
In terms of who we should sign, I think Jonas Hector should be considered. He has emerged as Germany’s first choice left back and it would be a surprise if he wasn’t at least on Pep’s radar, given his rise to prominence in the Bundesliga with 1. FC Köln.
Josh Lawless - John Stones
John Stones is a top target for City and has all the tools to grow into a complete defender, with the assistance of Pep Guardiola.
The rumoured £40 million transfer tag is a steep one but you are playing for potential with this deal and Stones has bags of it.
He has suffered from inept tactics and coaching at Everton and England but Guardiola can nurture him and transform into a top-level central defender.
Ben Warner - Toni Kroos
Unrealistic, I know, but would be a fantastic addition to the squad, which I’m sure I don’t need to tell anyone. He’s a key part of the Germany team I’m tipping to win the Euros, and his range of passing really is superb, which would make him an integral part of a City team should he arrive, even if he wouldn’t come cheap.
Yann Griffiths - John Stones
I’m pleased with our purchases so far, but I feel we need strengthening at the back – with Vincent Kompany struggling with recurring injuries and Eliaquim Mangala yet to live up to his price tag. Everton’s John Stones is a man who splits opinion, at times it’s clear he spends too much time with the ball at his feet but his ability on the floor for a man of his age is unrivalled. With Guardiola’s knack for moulding a raw talent and his passing blueprint – Stones could be a perfect fit for City.
