Fans love discussing the players who shouldn’t have been sold, were sold at the wrong time or the club didn’t use them correctly. Of course, there are a plethora of examples at Manchester City so we’ve opted to use our duel feature to get your thoughts.
Well the votes are in and we will now reveal the top five players fans would take back at the club if presented with the opportunity.
This was based on the percentage of duels each candidate won when pitted against another player.
Gareth Barry, Robinho, Micah Richards and Edin Dzeko were all in the duel, but didn’t score too many votes.
Anyway, we’ve assembled the top five players City fans would like to see return to the club and there are many household names involved.
5. Alvaro Negredo
First up we have Alvaro Negredo, who won 42% of his duels. Instantly Negredo was a hit with the City fans and formed a lethal partnership with Sergio Aguero in 2013/14 – with the Spaniard scoring 23 goals. Unfortunately he suffered a shoulder injury against West Ham in January and never recovered.
4. Daniel Sturridge
Winning 43% of his duels was Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge. Back in 2008, Sturridge was in and around the first team and impressed; chipping in with a few goals and linking up well with Robinho and Stephen Ireland. However his wage demands were said to be too high and he signed for Chelsea in 2009.
3. Nigel De Jong
A fan favourite for his tenacious battling midfield play, De Jong takes third place – winning 47% of his duels. For sure he won a lot of duels on the pitch before moving on to AC Milan in 2012.
2. Carlos Tevez
Carlos Tevez won a fair chunk of his duels – accumulating a percentage of 72%. The Argentine played a key part in the growth of the club and helped fire City to the title after a bit of a mid-season break playing golf. Some City fans are still disappointed that he left for such a small fee.
1. Jerome Boateng
Jerome Boateng takes his place at the very top of the pile, remarkably winning 81% of his duels. Signed from Hamburg in 2010, Boateng spent just a single season at City before departing for Bayern Munich. City fans clearly feel he was under-utilised. Could he join Guardiola at City?
