Manchester City have launched a £39m bid for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to German newspaper Bild.

With Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola set to take over at City in the summer, the Citizens are preparing for a squad overhaul and, with Yaya Toure poised to depart, the 23-year-old could be cited as an ideal replacement.

The Switzerland international has caught the eye of several European clubs since his move to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 and has since spoken of his dream of playing in England.

Xhaka, who has also been linked with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, has also previously expressed his desire to play at the Etihad Stadium.

Logically, it is hard to say no when City wants you and you can play there.

I will openly admit that and I’m sure that does not only apply to me.

The ex-Basel playmaker appeared twice against City in the Champions League group stage this year and impressed the Sky Blues’ fans with his technical ability.
