Manuel Pellegrini will leave the club at the end of the season and will be replaced by Pep Guardiola. It’s a move that Manchester City fans are quite right to be ecstatic about when you look at Guardiola’s pedigree and throw in the resources that City have at their disposal.
Pellegrini has been a good servant to the club, delivering two trophies in his first season as well as being responsible for some of the finest football the club has ever seen.
But he has also been partly to blame for some atrocious performances.
Here are the five worst performances under Pellegrini.
Manchester City 1-2 CSKA Moscow
We begin with a Champions League group game with CSKA Moscow. What was strange for this one was that there were no away fans present and yet still little to shout about for home fans.
Seydou Doumbia put the visitors ahead almost immediately with a free header before Yaya Toure scored a trademark free-kick for the leveller.
But City did not improve and Doumbia struck again in the first half. Fernandinho and Toure were sent off to complete a flat and miserable display on Bonfire night
Stoke City 2-0 Manchester City
This season has seen many sub-standard performances by City and one came at the Brittania Stadium.
With aggressive winds, City just could not generate any sort of rhythm on the ball and were thoroughly outclassed by Mark Hughes’ Stoke.
Marko Arnautovic bagged a double and City did not look like replying throughout the duration of the game.
Manchester City 1-3 Leicester City
You only have to go a couple of weeks back to find one of City’s most embarrassing defeats.
Granted, Leicester are well-drilled, spirited and playing well this season but City did not take the game them and the Foxes were comfortable throughout.
Robert Huth helped himself to a brace either side of a Riyad Mahrez strike. City were pulled apart with ease and could not cope against Vardy and co.
Aguero bagged a late consolation but it was a day to forget for City fans.
Manchester United 4-2 Manchester City
A derby defeat never goes down too well but the manner in which this one was lost was embarrassing.
City came out of the traps quickly and were ahead inside eight minutes but once Ashley Young levelled matters in the 14th minute City fell apart.
Fellaini scored the second and bullied City throughout before Mata and Smalling added insult to injury.
The Blues were thoroughly outplayed and what made it more frustrating was that City had the chance to get themselves back in the game late on when Aguero scored his second and United were down to 10 men when all three subs had been made and Carrick went off injured.
Manchester City 1-4 Liverpool
The worst performance I have seen under Pellegrini, and he would probably agree, was against Liverpool in November.
City, without the leadership of Kompany in the backline, were terrorised at the back – Mangala and Demichelis regularly outdone by an ordinary Liverpool side.
Mangala scored an own goal while Coutinho, Firmino and Skrtel were all on the scoresheet for the visitors.
Aguero got a goal on his return but City did not test Simon Mignolet and his leaky Liverpool defence.
It was the heaviest home defeat I can remember and it was a horrible performance from City when they had the chance to top the Premier League table.
