The defensive midfielder recently revealed that he would be ‘honoured’ to reunite with former manager Pep Guardiola, who is taking over from Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City boss at the end of the season.
As a result of these claims, the Citizens have approached Busquets’ agent over a possible summer switch to the Etihad Stadium.
Talks are, at the moment, at an informal stage but both parties seem keen on the move, with the Spain international hoping that Guardiola will fulfil his promise of improving Busquets’ contract.
However, Guardiola is said to be against signing players from the Catalan giants unless there are ‘exceptional circumstances’, like when he made Thiago his first Bayern Munich signing in 2013.
Since being confirmed as Pellegrini’s successor, the 45-year-old has been linked with moves for Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar – all of which play for Barcelona.
